Delivering Innovation

The tent is one of the best achievements of man. Not only is it a simple but effective shelter, it is also portable and durable. Shelters of this type (with support frames and a cloth) date back centuries. This earlier version of a tent was used by groups such as the Romans, the Greeks, the Persians, etc. as it was efficient and could be quickly disassembled and assembled.

The Romans and other forces included mainly camping equipment in their wartime travels. However, their camping gear was nothing compared to what bears are today. It usually involved a large sheet of cloth along with support frames. Although these frames were often made right where they were.

Once they established a border and a camping ground; they would just make a large frame and cover their canvas or whatever materials they had through the frame. This provided them with fast and reliable protection against the elements without being a burden to load or dismantle. Most likely, they just took the materials that covered them and left the frame, as it was unnecessary to even dismantle it.

This old model of tent was later discarded when the 70’s began. With this new decade came new technologies; especially in the world of tents. Instead of using traditional frame materials, they began experimenting with stronger materials like metals. These metals ranged from aluminum, which was light but strong, to thin stainless steel rods. After the frames began to look stronger and more portable, they began to revolutionize the other half of the store; the cover.

As the new metals increased the durability of the store, the materials were also needed. Therefore, manufacturers began to make the covers with materials such as nylon and polyester instead of more natural materials. These weren’t the best materials on the market, but they were more durable in extreme conditions compared to the best fabrics.

The tent we know today was finally developed. Instead of solid rods that were placed and tied together, they began to simplify them with frames that fit together. Also added were “pegs”, which are pegs that attach to the fabric and the frame of the tent and keep it locked to the ground. All of these new advancements made the store even more convenient than it already was. Now it was the best tool for outdoor enthusiasts, as well as others who needed a quick and easy shelter.

The history of tents covers a large part of history. It was used from the time of Roman soldiers to the leisure weekends of outdoor enthusiasts everywhere. Throughout history, it has become one of the best forms of portable, quick-to-ride shelter. Tents have not only withstood advances in technology, they have embraced them, making them a reliable, durable and enjoyable method of shelter around the world.
