Delivering Innovation

To identify your hamster breed, you need to know specific information. The key is knowing which attributes refer to coat type, which ones refer to patterns, and which attributes refer to colors.

Once you have this information about your hamster, you can easily identify the breed.

In Campbell’s dwarf hamster (Phodopus campbelli), there are three types of fur. The first is normal, which is also called short hair. The second type of coat is called satin; Dwarf hamsters with this type of coat have longer hairs and, in my opinion, instead of looking like hairballs, they look like mops with four legs. The third type of coat is called a rex. Usually this means that the hairs are curly. In the case of Campbell’s dwarf, the whiskers are curly and the coat is frizzy. The hair is very sparse, so the hamster appears bald.

As for the information on the coat patterns of Cambell hamsters, there are three types. The former is normal. With this pattern, the back is one color and her belly is white. On the sides, the colors go from dark to light in a series of arcs. The animal has a dark stripe on its back.

The pattern of the second layer is called platinum. The top coat is grayish-brown in color, but the dwarf hamster’s shoulder hair tips are white. The dorsal stripe is black and the lateral arches appear amber. The ears are dark gray.

The pattern of the third layer is called speckled. This is a dwarf hamster with patchy white spots. Also, the animals’ eyes are red.

As for the information about the coat colors of the dwarf hamster, they are numerous: in addition to the normal agouti-colored coat, the coats of Campbell’s dwarf hamsters come in the colors beige, black, lilac, blue, opal, argente, fawn blue, lilac fawn, dove, white, albino, champagne, harlequin and white belly.

The best place to see all coat types, patterns, and color combinations is at a hamster show.
