Royal Malaysian Recipes interviews a special royal angel, born into the Malaysian royal family
Tunku Puan Sri Azizah (Tunku is the title that Malaysian royalty is born with and Puan Sri is a title bestowed by the King of Malaysia and Aziziah is a female name). Tunku Puan Sri Azizah is an angel sent from heaven who became my mother-in-law and mentor 32 years ago when I left Ireland and married her son Tunku Dato ‘Mu’tamir (nickname Roy).
In the 32 years that I have known my mother-in-law I have never heard an angry word leave her lips and I have never heard her raise her voice in any way, to her family, friends, grandchildren or her husband. All her life I heard her apologize to people even though she had done nothing wrong.
She never cajoled, demanded or ever asked me to follow her Malaysian cultural customs and so I did it because of her soft and unassuming manner. She let me make the decision through the love she has for her son, as she knew that if it was my choice, I would do it with a good, loving and sincere heart … and guess what worked. He taught me to forgive and not to speak ill of people at any time, to be humble without ego and not to expect anything in return for my actions.
My mother in law comes from a long line from Sharifah. In Malaysia, the Sharifah are considered very special spiritually gifted individuals (they transmit this spirituality to one individual in each generation, my husband was the next chosen one, and now my youngest daughter Martika has been invested with him) these heavenly chosen individuals are born with no bad thoughts and seeing the good in everything and everyone regardless. I have often heard my mother-in-law apologize to those around her, who speak harsh words, just in case she was responsible for her words.
