Oily skin is not a disease, it’s just a skin texture that bothers you and you want to get rid of. Due to lack of proper oily skin care guidance and information available, it has become one of the major skin problems that leads to pimples, acne, blackheads and many more.

Several factors are said to be responsible for the aggravation of oily skin:

1. Keep your skin absolutely clean – You may be well aware of the fact that the oilier your skin, the dirtier it looks and feels. And to get rid of this, keep your skin clean by washing it at least twice a day.

Generally, some doctors recommend using detergent-type soaps on the face. As a substitute, you can add 1-2 drops of dishwashing detergent to your regular soap.

While some doctors condemn the use of detergent-type soaps as they are too strong for oily facial skin. Instead, they recommend using glycerin soaps to cleanse your face twice a day.

If using a detergent soap irritates the skin on your face, try glycerin soap, readily available without a prescription.

2. Try aloe vera – This wonderful house plant is best for absorbing oils from the skin. Cut a sheet and smear the gel on your face 3 times a day. Let it dry. Or you can also keep a small amount of gel in the fridge during summers for a refreshing facial rejuvenation.

3. Clean with Astringents – Clean oily spots on your face by rubbing alcohol or a combination of alcohol and acetone which helps to degrease your oily skin. Many drug stores even sell individually wrapped alcohol wipes that are truly portable—you can throw them in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day.

4. Take tissue paper with you – Facial tissues are the best substitute for astringents as they help absorb excess oil in no time. Get those special grease-absorbent wipes from a cosmetics counter that come in handy for removing excess oil between cleanses.

5. Rinse your face with cold water – Simply splashing your face with cold water and blotting it dry a couple of times a day is the equivalent of applying chemicals to your skin. These cold water rinses remove excess oil from your face.

6. Say NO to moisturizers – Never chase those tempting ads that force you to buy facial moisturizers for oily skin. These are the fatal temptations that lead you to disastrous skin. Instead, apply a sunscreen to your face before facing the sun or going outdoors. And yes, don’t forget to check the labels of products specially designed for oily skin.

7. Make your own scrub – Make a paste with a small amount of ground almonds with honey and apply as a facial scrub to remove oil and dead skin cells. Now gently massage this paste on your face with a warm washcloth. Finally, rinse with cold water.

Another oatmeal scrub mixed with aloe vera can be very beneficial for you. Gently rub into your skin and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. And if you suffer from acne on your face, then you should probably skip the scrub, as it can aggravate your already irritated skin.

8. Apply Masks on your oily face – The masks prove to be very beneficial in reducing oiliness. Either clay masks or you can mix Fuller’s Earth (easily available) with a little water and make a paste. Apply this paste on your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes and then rinse it off.

9. Choose only water-based cosmetics – Try to make your skin breathe by living without makeup, especially foundation. Using oil-based makeup or foundation blocks the pores of the skin, leading to blemishes. And if you must, use only water-based makeup, especially blemish concealers instead of covering your entire face. In general, prefer to use powder or gel blushes and avoid cream foundations as much as possible.

10. Pick up your hair well – Keep your hair out of your face as oily hair accompanies oily skin.

11. Do not touch the skin of your face – Avoid touching your face throughout the day as your hands produce excess oil and dirt.

12. Choose a powder for you – For that extra shine-free protection, use simple products for your oily face like Johnsons Baby Powder. This makes a great face powder when lightly dusted over makeup.

13. Splash the hot foam – Hot water is a great solvent. Therefore, lukewarm water should be used to wash an oily face and that with plenty of soap. Hot water plus soap dissolves oil from the skin better than cold water and soap.
